A new generation of boats for the Wadden Sea.
Waddenfonds supports innovative projects that contribute to a sustainable future for the Wadden region. IMPACD is one of the organisations developing such a project: a 9 meter 3D printed boat, designed for sustainable crossings and excursions on the Wadden Sea. The boat will accommodate up to 12 passengers and is being developed specifically for small group crossings between the Wadden Islands and the mainland, as well as excursions on the Wadden Sea. The boat will be launched in 2027.
Built for a unique environment
The Wadden Sea is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's most valuable tidal ecosystems. Developing sustainable ways to experience and connect this unique area is therefore an important part of the project. The 9 meter Wadden Boat combines large scale 3D printing and recycled materials. The hull will be printed from recycled plastic. The 3D printing process also allows material to be deposited precisely where it is needed, reducing production waste.
From recycled plastic to a seaworthy boat
The project goes beyond the development of a single prototype. Together with recycling and maritime partners, IMPACD is developing a circular material chain, from collecting and sorting suitable plastic waste to processing it into material that can be used for large scale 3D printing. The prototype will be extensively tested at sea to validate its performance, safety and suitability for the latest European requirements. Research partners will also independently assess the sustainability and environmental impact of the boat.

Supported by the Wadden Fund, the project demonstrates how new technology can help create cleaner and more sustainable mobility on one of the Netherlands' most unique waterways.
